I can remember one patient I had. She was a street person as was her boyfriend. It was winter and she had been hospitalized. He came to visit her everyday. He always came around meal time. He was poorly dressed for the winter conditions and so through our social worker they managed to get him some winter clothing. We would feed him and when visiting hours were over he would be off on his way until the next morning when he would arrive for breakfast.Smalltown RNhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08806734351278128551noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7558528804236989500.post-72834877397567711452011-05-21T01:35:22.684-04:002011-05-21T01:35:22.684-04:00Excellent and provoking read.

Didn't fly at all (and backed up by hospital administration and risk management amazingly enough). Oxygen is considered a drug/medication and a prescription/physician order is required for administration.

Visitor was told register as an ER patient and be evaluated if the need for oxygen was so dire.

Sure the visitor was not happy. I was impressed that management would rather take a "ding" on a pt survey than risk an adverse effect or worse from a visitor "self medicating" with not-exactly-cheap oxygen.

There was also the self-entitled visitor that totally flipped out when told that her 'friend' was not a high priority when there was CPR in progress not only on 50-something patient but also on a 3 year old child. I had to walk away. (Her 'friend' the patient didn't really care, he was happy with a blanket, pillow and dim lights at 2AM, amazing since his 9 months of "severe" back pain was so bad it required a middle of night ER visit.) I think ultimately the visitor was escorted off property by security. (Not really sure since I was doing a pharmacy run for the pediatric code and ran off to deliver the drugs)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7558528804236989500.post-68491749215836641922011-05-17T17:10:54.949-04:002011-05-17T17:10:54.949-04:00It is sad that people feel entitled to ask for any...It is sad that people feel entitled to ask for anything and not others there in the e.r.

When I was in er for a ruptured cyst, I approached it differently.
I asked the nurse for a pillow(wasn't one) and a blanket (ok if cold and not heated) after I first met him/her.
